Nail staining/yellowing - why, how to prevent it, how to treat it?/ Ingalbenirea/patarea unghiilor - de ce, cum sa o previi, cum sa o tratezi?

Yellow nails - we all had our share. In this post I will tell you all about what's causing them, how to prevent them and how to treat them. Yellow nails can be a pain in the ass if you're a french manicure lover like me. If you're always wearing opaque polishes, you probably don't care if your nails are yellow but still, it could be helpful to know what's causing them.

First of all, there are two kinds of staining:
In primul rand, exista doua feluri de patari:

1. a) The "acute" staining
    b) Patarea "acuta"

Shamely I have to admit, this is my nail. As you can see, the "acute" phase appears in the shape of stains. These can be located anywhere on the nail and they will grow out. The acute staining is caused by:

- not wearing basecoat underneath your nail polish (I skipped basecoat because I was only going to wear the colour for one day and this is what I got)

- wearing certain colours for extended periods of time

How to prevent it:

- always, always use basecoat

- certain colours (yellow, green, red, black, blue or other very saturated colours) stain more than others; when wearing them, better apply two basecoat layers and don't keep them on for more than four-five days (maximum)

- even with two basecoat layers, keep in mind there are some polishes which will surely stain your nails, no matter what you do; check out the awful staining Manicure Addict got:

Cum sa o previi:

- intotdeauna, fara exceptie foloseste baza

How to treat it:

Because this kind of staining occurs in the first few layers of keratin cells, all you have to do is to remove those layers. This can be done in two ways:

a) chemically - using a "gentle" acid like lemon juice which will corrode the surface of your nails thus removing those stained top layers

b) mechanically - buffing them lightly until all the stains have gone

b) mecanic - slefuindu-le usor pana cand toate petele dispar

2. a) The "chronic" staining
    b) Patarea "cronica"

This is common on nail-art bloggers' swatch hand. The chronic staining doesn't look like a stain, but more like a general yellowing located on the bottom part of the nail bed. I have never had this type of staining but thanks to Georgia (from Gia Makeup Blog) I can show you a photo of how this looks:

Another example, much more accentuated, is Lucy from Lucy's Stash. Here's a video in which you can clearly see the difference between the nails on her swatch hand and the ones on her other hand:

This kind of staining is caused by applying polish and removing it very often! As I never had it, I'm not sure if it goes away using the same methods described for the acute staining because it seems to be located deeper than the first layers of cells. The best way to make sure you never get it or it goes away is to polish your nails once or maximum twice a week. If you're concerned that your nail polish doesn't last that long, check out this post I wrote on this matter Make your nail polish last as long as you want!.

Nail staining/yellowing can also be caused by a fungus or bacterial infection. If you notice anything peculiar about one of your nails, go see a doctor fast, before the infection spreads to all of your nails.

And  now, I'd like to apologise for the lack of posting this week. My nails are now long and I filed them in an oval shape and they look gorgeous and I also didn't have any design in mind so I kept them simple, with basecoat on. When you don't feel like painting them or you want to flaunt them, I recommend applying two layers of basecoat and two layers of normal topcoat or only two layers of gel polish topcoat in order to make sure they will not break (especially if they are soft and thin and they always bend). Here's how they look:

Si acum, as vrea sa ma scuz pentru lipsa postarilor saptamana aceasta. Asa arata:

Hope this post was useful! See you soon!

Sper ca aceasta postare a fost utila! Pe curand!
